I'm a fourth year undergrad student studying biology and fine arts at Cornell University. Outside of drawing, painting, and studying, I really like to run, hike or do anything outside. I'm also involved in biogeochemistry research, and I'm currently working on my honors thesis which involves utilizing stable isotope data to gain insight on ecosystem dynamics and the impact of environmental legislation.
I've been making art for as long as I can remember, though the materials I use have changed a lot over time. I spent all of my free time in middle school making polymer clay food and animals but eventually I transitioned to 2D art. Until my freshman year of college, I painted exclusively with acrylic paint and drew with colored pencils, but have recently transitioned to oil paints and a combination of watercolor & colored pencil.
These are some of the polymer clay sculptures I made in middle school. (I think I set myself up for a life of back problems from the amount of time I spent leaning over a desk playing with tiny lumps of clay.)
When the pandemic hit in 2020, I decided to start a commission art business. I made pet portraits, landscapes, and (human) portraits based on photos people sent me. This little side hustle definitely helped me work on my skills and gave me a bit of experience working under time restraints.
Here are some of my favorite commissions & portraits
I love art for being something to look at but I've been working towards making my art more meaningful. In 2023, I started making scientific illustrations for both my science classes and my research, because the visualization helps communicate the ideas that my words aren't able to. I also think that art makes science more accessible, which is something I think is really important and have in mind when I'm working on projects.
I also appreciate the fact that I can use art to advocate for the things I care about. My 2024 Bycatch project was displayed at a library on campus, providing information about the impact of unsustrainable fishing methods and I was then able to sell prints of the paintings to raise money for ocean conservation.
Life events through art
I made this painting of my cross country team as a gift for our coaches and graduating seniors that year
My high school's marching band commissioned me to draw their drum major, who just so happens to be one of my best friends
At my last state track meet of high school I had to wait a few hours for my events to start, so I drew some birds with our long jump chalk
